The Big Voice opened modestly at the Trinity River Arts Center in a special two-week run which just happened to coicide with the striking down of sodomy laws, so the headlines in the gay press featured Jim, Steve and the Supreme Court. Jeff Rane, artistic director of the Uptown Players produced.
This is what the review looked like in the Dallas Morning News:
Dallas Morning News (July 2, 2003):Enthused by the consistently strong reaction, the duo felt they were ready for Chicago...Divine Inspiration! It’s too bad the title The Odd Couple is already taken. It suits Jim Brochu and Steve Schalchlin perfectly. They’re really a couple couple - picture Zero Mostel and Anthony Perkins in love. The small-scale tuner suggests that show business is a calling as undeniable as that to the priesthood or ministry. Schalchlin writes earnest, beautiful tunes and delivers them with almost evangelical zeal. The most indelible moment occurs when Brochu finally has his religious epiphany - a hilarious, inspired scene.
Mr. Brochu’s voice is brassier and more comical, Mr. Schalchlin’s more keening and sincere - in the Billy Joel-Elton John mode. Though the latter does most of the singing, the two harmonize well in duets. Is that art or life? For these two both are both.
Especially when they got the news that The Big Voice had been nominated for two of the highest theatre prizes in Los Angeles. TheatreLA's Ovation awards nominations listed:
BEST ACTOR IN A MUSICAL: JIM BROCHU
BEST MUSICAL: THE BIG VOICE: GOD OR MERMAN?
The ceremony was star-studded and the team reveled in hanging out with people like Lily Tomlin and Marge Champion.
Okay. NOW it was time for Chicago.
